about

To My House was a commission from Brendan Maher at The Source Arts Centre in Thurles. It is a piece in two halves. The first is fairly conventional and built around a slow guitar and vocal arrangement, minimally decorated with synths and field recordings, while the second part heads off into more impressionistic territory based on a heavily processed vocal sample. The repeated line ‘To me, to my house, you will come (after your death)’ is associated with the story of Donn, Celtic lord of the dead and seemed to fit with other related traditions of communion with the dead. I took on his voice. He might not in fact have been from South London but where’s the proof?

In searching for an appropriate sound to manipulate for the second half I came across a lovely old recording of Sean-nos singer Treasa Ní Mhiolláin singing Cúirt Bhaile Nua. The churning, ghostly voices are a heavily processed version of an extract from that recording and it also features more briefly in more or less its original form. Digging deeper it turned out that Treasa was very much still around and I managed to contact her via The Irish World Academy in Limerick to get her blessing for using her voice, for which I am very grateful. Thanks also of course to Brendan at The Source for the commission, which was very welcome. It has been an interesting project.’

A set of projects recorded since 2020. They chart a path from the kind of weird pop that I’d been involved in since my time as front man for New Fast Automatic Daffodils in the nineties, to my current interest in electronic, semi improvised performance and a more experimental approach. ... more
